DO KNOW THAT YOU’RE SELLING YOURSELF TOO.
When you meet with a videographer, they should be interviewing you as much as you are interviewing them. Keep in mind they can’t do unlimited weddings a year so finding clients who are a great fit for them is important. Don’t be shy when it comes to showing off your personalities and what is unique about you, your love story, your one-of-a-kind family, your wild and crazy friends, and your wedding day. Find a videographer that wants to actually get to know you and is interested in what you are excited about, instead of a videographer that emails a “number” or a price sheet over to you.
DO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WEDDING FILM AND WEDDING VIDEO.
A film is a visual story. It has music that is intentionally paired with well-chosen footage so that it enhances the moments unfolding on screen. A film is meaningful. And it’s not just a glorified music video set to the most popular love song on the radio this year. It won’t collect dust because you’ll be proud to show it off. A film is polished and professional. A film is crafted by skillful artists who know what shots to take and how to work with every element of the event, including the people, technology, and weather. On the other hand, a traditional wedding video is typically a shaky montage of clips (sometimes including cheesy effects) used chronologically and/or unintentionally. Don’t get us wrong, that can be a fine way to remember your day, but don’t pay an arm and a leg for something a college kid could put together.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT AUDIO.
There are all different types of wedding videographers out there, but one thing is for certain. Audio is the most important part of the story. Find a videographer that actually uses audio from your day…spoken word from your vows, toasts, and party…to tell your story. And make sure you find a videographer that knows how to capture audio in a crystal clear way, which is also discrete, and doesn’t get in the way of your wedding. Pretty shots are great, but without them being paired with voices, promises made, and laughter being heard, the whole story isn’t being told, and your wedding day is worth more than that.
DON’T BE SWAYED BY BUZZ WORDS.
4K, DSLR, DRONES, OH MY! Camera-speak and of-the-moment lingo like “cinematic” shouldn’t be excessive. If a videographer is using buzzwords to sell you, but isn’t showing you something you connect with, then who cares? And if you’re the one asking about the equipment, stop right there. You should be able to tell if the videographer has quality gear (and knows how to use it) by seeing his or her work.
DO LOOK DEEPER THAN THE QUALITY OF THE IMAGE.
Most videographers you’ll find will have the latest gear that looks beautiful on screen. Right now the hype is in aerial work and you’ll notice that most videographers will be able to get sweeping drone shots of your location. That’s all great, but you’ll find the videographers that rely on the quality of the image, all tend to look the same. What’s the value in that? When searching for the perfect videographer, look beyond the quality of the image, and instead look to the quality of the moments captured. Real value in having a wedding film is when your videographer captures candid moments, your friends laughing, hugging, and enjoying your day naturally on camera. If moments like your grandma watching you dance, the flower girl picking her nose at the altar, or your friends tearing up as your dress is being zipped are caught, then you know you’ve struck gold.
What we’re talking about when we say there’s a difference between a video and a film.
